Nellai sambar recipe with step by step photos. Very flavorful and delicious sambar recipe as made in Tirunelveli district! Made with fresh sambar masala this sambar tastes wonderful with hot steamed rice!
We make sambar often at home. So I always search for different sambar recipes. This nellai sambar or tirunelveli sambar recipe is a family favorite. This recipe is from a friend and I just love this sambar for its flavor.
Tirunelveli saiva pillai recipes are very tasty and unique. I have got few saiva pillai recipes to add here from my friend. Few tasty saiva pillai recipes that I have tried are sodhi kuzhambu, ellu thogayal, ulundu sadam, aviyal.
To make authentic sambar recipe from saiva pillai cuisine a fresh sambar masala should be made. I have used drumsticks, broad beans, carrots, brijnjal and onions in sambar recipe.
You can serve this sambar with rice and spicy vegetab;e fry. This sambar also tastes good with idli and dosa.

How to make nellai sambar recipe
1. rinse and pressure cook toor dal. Mash well and set aside.
2. Soak tamarind in hot water for 15 minutes. Extract thick juice and set aside.
3. Grind coconut, cumin seeds and small onions into a paste.
4. Heat oil in a pan. Temper with mustard seeds and curry leaves.
5. Add the cubed vegetables and saute well. Add turmeric powder, sambar powder and saute well.
6. Add tamarind extract and mix well. Add 1.5 cups water and bring to a boil.
7. Add the prepared coconut paste and mix well. Season with salt and boil for 5 minutes.
8. Add the mashed toor dal and mix well.Simmer for 5 more minutes.
9. Add cilantro leaves and mix well. Remove from flame. Serve sambar with rice.

Ingredients
For making sambar masala
- 1/4 cup grated coconut
- 6 small onions
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
Other ingredients for sambar
- 1/4 cup toor dal Pressure cook and mash
- 2 tablespoons thick tamarind extract From small lemon sized tamarind
- 1.5 cups vegetables drumstick, broad beans,eggplants, carrot, onions
- 2 tablespoons sambar powder
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 10 curry leaves
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 2 tablespoons oil
- Salt to taste
Instructions
To make sambar masala
