FOR ALL THOSE WHO THINK PULSED GMA IS SUITED TO ALL POSITION WELDS. JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN PRODUCE A VERT UP OR OVERHEAD PULSED MIG WELD IS NOT A GOOD ENOUGH REASON TO USE THE PROCESS WITH MANY COMMON APPLICATIONS.TAKE NOTE OF THE THICKNESS MENTIONED..After evaluating pulsed GMA for 3 decades, I would never allow "manual" pulsed GMA on code quality, "all position applications with wal)thickness >1/4 (>7mm). However if you have to use it, ensure you do macros especiallt on vert up and OH fillets. The macros will often reveal robust side wall fusion is rare and the manual pulsed GMA fusion sensitivity concerns will be influenced by;[] the variable energy from low to peak pulsed MIG parameters, [] the healthy deposition rates that drive weld speeds that don't allow sufficient time for the fusion to occur, [] the Wire Stick Out variations that require only a slight increase in stick out for a large decrease in amps,[] the different and often not optimum weld practices that will be used by different welders on a project. [] the influence of mill scale on fusion. Remember this applies to "manual" pulsed MIG welds, I am well aware that automated pulsed MIG welds can provide superior and more consistent pulsed MIG fusion (but often not robust fusion). The automation benefits the welds as a result of fixed weld travel speed, fixed WSO, and weld weave constants. For best results on all position weld on steels > 7 mm use CV equip. and 045 flux cored. wire 250 to 400 ipm is typical 25 - 27 V to start. The FCA wires enable more constant, higher energy, (increased fluidity) welds controlled by slag, and the increased current density from the core wires and higher CO2 gas capability all add to the weld fusion potential. And don't forget when possible use stringers. And yes straight CO2 will with these wires provides more fusion than argon 25CO2. I like the Kobelco, Alloy Rods and Tri Mark wires. I avoid Hobart and Lincoln made wires as a result of excess worm tracks and production wire feed limitations. However if yo do, do macros and focus on vert up and OH fillets, rather than the butt welds.
