SPORTS THE SPRINGFIELD UNION, SPRINGFIELD, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 22, 1964 SPORTS Maroons Topple Trin Behind Robbins, 15-0 Southpaw Twirls Two Hitter in Easy Win; Scheffel, Whalen Star at Plate By JERRY RADDING Southpaw Bruce Robbins pitched a strong two-hitter and his mates backed him with plenty of action on the Springfield trounced Trinity, 15-0, our Tuesday at Berry Field. Robbins, using a sinking knuckler and an overpowering fast ball, never allowed visiting runner past second base. He struck out 11 and walked only four in recording his first victory of the sason. Big Fast Three The Maroons, lifting their record to 2-2. got 16 hits off a quartet of Trin twirlers.

There were squiblers, dribblers, bleeders, and what have you--but it still amounted to Springfield's best offensive showing of the campaign. Seven errors also contributed to the Hartford team's third loss in four starts. The Maroons' big innings were the last three. They scored five times in the sixth and four each in the seventh and eighth. Bob Scheffel, catching his first game for the home team, and second baseman Andy Whalen led the home attack with three hits apiece.

Dave Bartsch, Stam and Andy Thompson each had two safeties. Robbins had a no-hitter going until two were out in the seventh one through the hole for a single. when "Joe. Hourihan grounded a Bruce MacDougall singled past second to lead off the ninth for the only other visiting hit. Robbins Gets Hit Springfield picked up an unearned run off Trin starter Chris McNeil in the second.

Thompson's infield hit Whalen's double to center made it 2-0 in the fifth. In the sixth. however, things really went wrong for the Hartford team. Springfield sent 11 batters to the plate, and even pitcher Robbins got into the act by cracking a two-run single. The first five Maroon batters reached to start the seventh.

Bartsch, Stam. Scheffel and Whalen all had hits and Thomp son was safe when his grounder got past the third baseman. Dick Lazzerini relieved McNeil, but before the inning was over, Springfield had four more runs. It was more of the same in the eighth as Trin needed two pitchers, Chris Dunham and Mark Lowenthal, to put out another four-run fire. The Maroons will be at Rhode Island Thursday and sophom*ore Wayne Granger will pitch.

Russian Cage Team Gains Win Over Americans Disorganized AAU Five Drops 82-65 Verdict In Series Opener MOSCOW (AP) The Russian national basketball team, using a tight zone defense, defeated a somewhat disorganized United States AAU team 82-65 Tuesday opening game of the Americans' eight-game tour of the Soviet Union. No Outside Success It was the first time an American team had lost on Soviet soil since Russian-American competition began. 1958. The U.S. players, had been together for only two games in Poland before coming here, lacked cohesion and were unable to score on shots from the outside.

During and after the game the Americans complained about the officiating. of referees Elio Luglini Italy and Hubert Jacobs of East Germany. Leonard Buck of Denver, head of the U.S. delegation, declared: "This is the worst officiated game I have ever seen. The fouls called on us were fouls, but they missed fouls the other team committed." John Collins hit 10 flat in the 100-yard dash and 22 flat in the 220 while Paul Riker tossed the javelin 184 feet to feature the Cathedral victory. Slomback started the scoring at AIC Park. Busy Afield Slomback, in the midst of a Friars Defeat Jeffs by 6-4 Karlson Stars in Relief Role to Preserve Win -Providence relief pitcher Hank Karlson struck out five men in innings to preserve a 6-4 victory for the Friars over Amherst College here Tuesday.

Amherst errors allowed three unearned runs and led to the Jeffs' second defeat in three games. Providence don scored all its runs in the first four innings against Amherst ace pitcher Ernie Lanning. Triples by John O'Rourke and Bob Bellemore were big blows in the first three innings. Amherst's leaky infield defense committed three errors to allow the Friars to score three runs in the fourth inning. Amherst scored its first run in the fifth inning off tiring starter Neol Kinski.

Four singles pro duced three runs in the sixth inning and with men on first and second and two out in the seventh Providence called the sideballing Karlson from the bullpen. Karlson held Amherst without a hit during his relief stint and saved the game for starter Kinski. The victory was the first against one loss for UConn in the Yankee Conference and was the third in 10 overall games. UMass is now 0-1 in the league and 2-2 overall.
